Nonlinear dynamical effects in integrated optoelectronic structures

| Description |
In future communication systems, semiconductor laser devices will play a central role for generating, transforming and processing signals at high speed. Such devices typically do not operate at stationary, but at complicated dynamical regimes. For example, it has been demonstrated that pulsating multisection DFB semiconductor lasers can be used effectively for all-optical signal regeneration at more than 40 GBit. Other experimental results show the existence of many kinds of complicated dynamics. For applications in communication, the following types of dynamics are most important: high frequency pulsations; short pulses; excitability, bistability, hysteresis and fast switching; locking on high-dimensional tori; synchronization of periodic, quasiperiodic or chaotic signals.
