The cleverest night of the year: June 14, 2008
The Long Night of Sciences, now in its 8th year, in Berlin and Potsdam is set to offer an exciting and varied program. Whether the humanities or natural sciences, applied or theoretical research: Anyone interested can come along and discover new and intriguing insights into the world of science. On June 14 from 5 pm until 1 am, you can look behind the scenes of over 60 scientific exhibits and discover the work done by several hundred scientists up close as it really happens.
Events involving Matheon
Matheon is making an important contribution to the program with a series of activities and events on its own while participating in numerous other activities: You can find a brief selection of Matheon’s contributions to the individual organized events here, many more can be found if you change to German.
- "Geometry above the rooftops": How high is the Pillar of Victory? How far can you see from the Television Tower? Am I "well proportioned"? If you visit us, you’ll then be able to answer all these questions yourself!
The cafeteria on the 9th floor of the Mathematics building offers numerous opportunities to work things out yourself: For example, you can apply simple formulas from the field of trigonometry to determine distances and heights without much effort in everyday situations or when out and about. And if you've had enough brain taxing, you can simply enjoy the spectacular view from the panorama terrace. A telescope is on hand for this. If you’re in need of some refreshment there is plenty on offer in the cafeteria.
This event is organized in cooperation with the French grammar school "Collège Voltaire" in Berlin-Reinickendorf. The pupils there have prepared a small leaflet "Mathematics while out and about" for Matheon and the "Long Night". They will also present their mathematical school project "How much water can a reservoir hold?".
Location: TU Berlin, Math Building, Strasse des 17. Juni 136, 10623 Berlin, Cafeteria in the 9th floor

- "Geometrical model making": Adults and children alike can try their hand at making models of various bodies. Platonic bodies, or kaleidocycles, in other words a body with a degree of freedom so that it can it can rotate in itself, are just some of the structures that can be made. And in between you can enjoy the view of the city on the panorama terrace while enjoying a drink or snack.

- "Play-along Sudoku": 2x2 Sudokus can be real fun even for the junior members of the family, especially if they’re the numbers themselves: Join the action on our big Sudoku play area and make sure you’re on the right field! But even if you can't count yet, you can still join in (and learn numbers from the game).
