Mission, Vision and History
DFG Research Centers are a new mechanism for funding research which was
established in 2000. They are intended to create internationally renowned
centers of excellence at the universities.
These DFG Research Centers are an essential strategic support instrument
for the DFG. Their aim is the concentration of scientific competence
in fields of innovative research and the creation of time-limited research
centers of international renown at the universities.
Applicants are scientifically oriented universities aiming to create
a new focal point based on their existing structures. The thematic
emphasis has to include a high degree of interdisciplinary cooperation.
Networking with other research facilities existing on-location is furthermore
desirable. Cooperations with industrial partners is possible within
the framework of a DFG Research Center.
DFG Research Centers are initially limited to a four year duration
with two possible extensions bringing the total lifespan to a maximum
of twelve years. Annual funding will amount to approximately 5 million
Euro.
