conform! The Movie

As long as the earth was flat, mapmakers had it easy.

By scaling the actual dimensions uniformly in all directions they could produce accurate, flat maps of the earth, easy to print, fold up, or bind into atlases. When the round earth, however, rolled around, life became harder. Shrinking a sphere, or piece of a sphere, uniformly, produces . . . a smaller sphere, or piece of a sphere, not easy to print or fold up. This movie tells the story of how the search for a good way to make flat maps of curved surfaces had important consequences for mathematics. The picture “conform!” directed by Prof. Alexander Bobenko and Dr. Charles Gunn runs as part of the " Berlin Short Film Festival " on July 5 , 8.00 p.m. , at Kino Babylon in Berlin Mitte .
